Join us in the "classroom" with Ashley Lloyd, legendary lady slider, shaper, designer and water woman with deep roots in the Santa Cruz community. Ashley has been teaching and guiding surfing for much of her life and has developed her own unique philosophy around catching waves and connecting with the ocean.
In this 4 part classroom session you will learn about:
Session 1: Ocean Safety & Conditions) + Getting through waves & Pop-Up Practice In this lesson we will cover ocean safety, how to read tide conditions as well as some more hands on tips for getting through waves and pop-up practice. Be ready to move a bit on land as we review the body position and motion needed to stand on your board.

Session 2: Reading Waves/ Locations The class will cover understanding the peak and energy of the wave, as well as how to read, understand, choose and ultimately catch the best wave for you. We'll also discuss the best locations to paddle out in the area and where to find great beginner waves.
Session 3: Etiquette This class will cover one of the most important aspects of surfing, especially in Santa Cruz... the rules of the road! Being safe and successfully catching waves has a lot to do with knowing how to navigate the lineup. Getting down with the dos and don'ts of dropping in and board control as well as how to be the best ocean steward all make having fun in the water easier and more joyful.
Session 4: Finding your place in the line up/ Boards Our final session will center on gaining a better understanding of where you should personally sit to best navigate the lineup given your skill and comfort level. How to "read" the lineup especially on crowded days. We'll also discuss what kind of equipment and boards are best for you: Shapes, dimensions, fins etc... come with all of your deep and burning questions.
