This 5 Day Experience with Traveler Surf Club owners Julie Cox and Rel Lavizzo-Mourey focusses on elevating longboard surf style and skill as well as using the ocean as a creative inspiration for personal projects and new ideas.
The retreat has two components: Surf and Creative Thinking
Creative Surf Style: Improving your individual surfing and longboarding abilities though water sessions with local guides and on land though workshops with ex-pro surfer Julie Cox. Emphasis will be on teaching classic longboard techniques such as cross-stepping, nose riding, turns and smoothing out your personal surf style. Professional videography and photography sessions during the trip will be used to analyze and target areas for improvement.
New Project Design: Do you have a personal project or idea that you have been wanting to focus more on in 2020 and the years ahead? Are you an entrepreneur with thoughts about how to take your business in a new direction? Each day Rel will lead workshops to focus on how to plant and grow the seed for your new idea in a way that taps into your creative energy. Through sharing individual ideas and experiences with a small group of peers, you will have the opportunity to engage positive feedback and accountability that extends beyond the time of the retreat.
By combining sessions both on land and in the water, our goal is to help participants draw on the meditative and inspirational energy of the ocean to help channel new levels of creativity in your surfing style and life work.
About Julie & Rel:
Julie Cox is a former professional longboard surfer, ranked 5th in the world from 2007-2009 on the Women's World Longboard Tour. Julie has coached surfing for over 20 years all over California and Mexico. In 2005 she designed a line of custom surfboards with shaper Jed Noll called the Jule Collection. After surfing professionally for years, Julie was Director of the California Surf Museum, then worked for other surf and retail brands before starting the Traveler Surf Clubs in Pacifica and Malibu.
Rel Lavizzo-Mourey founded Silver Lining apparel which creates outerwear lined with original artwork to highlight the idea that "it's what's inside that counts". The company has collaborated with both local artists and major museums such as the Smithsonian Institution. Rel has been involved with Traveler from the beginning, wearing many hats but focussing largely on strategy, community and business growth. She holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.
Julie and Rel are partners in both life and business. They love being able to share their individual passions for surf, art and travel and are excited to lead this small group experience with individuals seeking to visualize personal and surfing goals for 2020 and beyond.

Q: Should I bring my own board?
A: We always recommend that you bring the equipment you'll be most comfortable riding and learning on. The resort has a selection of rental boards available through Awayco with a few longboards, but please check to make sure you reserve a board ahead of time if you don't plan to bring one. If you bring your own board, please also remember to bring straps and take charge of properly securing your board on your airport transfer.
Q: Can I attend if I've never surfed before?
A: This retreat is not designed to teach basics or beginner surfing. You should be comfortable paddling out, catching waves on your own and not have excessive fear of the ocean. The goal of the workshops will be to break down some classic longboarding techniques and to implement these into your experiences during surf sessions. We will send out a questionnaire prior to the retreat to get a sense of your ability level and what you'd like to focus on during your time.
Q: Do I need to have some big project , creative or business idea to attend?
A: No, you don't need to have a grand project idea, but the creative thinking sessions will be most productive if you come with something in mind that you'd like to work on more in coming months. The idea is that you focus on something that you want to create: a business idea, a non-profit project, an art or writing project, etc. Creating means simply building something from nothing, or building something new or bigger out of something that already exists. We will send out a questionnaire prior to the retreat to get a sense of what you'd like to personally focus on during your time.
Q: Why is pricing for partners lower?
A: Partners of participants are welcome to attend and share accommodations (same bed and room) with a full-price participant (i.e. $2,320 option) There are two types of partner options:
1) A partner who intends to participate in all of the planned retreat activities listed above including surfing, yoga and workshops. (The additional cost for this option is + $1500 added to the first participant's booking fee of $2,320)
2) Partners who really would just prefer to "hang out" and only want to join the group for meals/non-planned activities. (The additional cost for this option is + $620 added to the first participant's booking fee of $2,320)
Q: Can I bring my kids?
A: Sorry, this is an adults only trip; all participants must be 18 years or older.
Q: What is the best airport to fly into?
A: The resort is located 3 hours from the Managua, Nicaragua Airport (MGA). The hotel recommends flying into Managua. All ground transportation to and from the airport is included.
Q: Can I extend my trip before or after the retreat?
A: You can extend your time at the resort before or after based upon hotel availability. If interested, please inquire about special room-rate discounts for Traveler Surf Club retreat guests.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org regarding details on the retreat and booking info.
For travel logistics, airline routes and recommendations, or anything related to the resort itself we will refer you to the Malibu Popoyo Resort staff.
