Laura was born and raised in the small, sleepy surf community that was Oahu’s North Shore in the ‘90s. Like most North Shore kids, while her parents surfed, the beach was her babysitter. In high school, she and her four closest girlfriends dubbed themselves “the five squids” and surfed every day on the reefs around Haleiwa.

After earning her BA in psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Laura moved to San Francisco to connect with her family’s early Bay Area ties–both her dad and uncles were core Bay Area surfers when they weren’t in Hawaii. Trading in a bikini for a wetsuit was tough (!) but understanding firsthand the lengths her family went to just to ride a few chilly NorCal waves reinvigorated and deepened her relationship with the ocean.

Laura is currently working on a graduate degree in Occupational Therapy at San Jose State University. Her goal as a licensed OT is to practice in the growing field of ocean therapy and introduce clients to the healing qualities of the water. Laura’s teaching style is patient and attentive, and lessons are always tailored to students’ prior knowledge (if any), goals, and comfort levels. She is particularly motivated to work with women, children, and other individuals that are underrepresented in the lineup.
