Land Sessions in Malibu

This 1.5 hour class series is designed to give an overview and introduction to surfing at the beginner level. In this three-part classroom program you will learn:

Lesson 1: Ocean Safety & Reading Waves: In this lesson we will cover ocean safety, as well as how to read weather and tide conditions. Knowing when to go is a big part of ensuring that you have a good surf, so we'll start to look at some of the key Surfline features that help determine optimal conditions for paddling out. We'll discuss the lifecycle of a wave as well as how to read, understand, choose, and ultimately catch the best wave for you.

Session 2: Paddling & Pop-ups: In this lesson we'll discuss different types of surf breaks and how different swells affect them. We'll also discuss the best locations to paddle out in the area and where to find great beginner waves. Next, we'll go over getting out to the lineup and through the whitewater as well as some of the psychological aspects to paddling into waves, plus how to practice your paddling, and then how to pop-up once you've successfully caught a wave. This class will involve some movement in place.

Session 3: Etiquette & Equipment:  Our final lesson will cover one of the most important aspects of surfing: the rules of the road. Being safe, having fun, and successfully catching waves has a lot to do with knowing how to navigate the lineup. Getting down with the dos and don'ts of dropping in and board control, as well as how to be the best ocean steward all make having fun in the water easier and more joyful. Additionally, we will discuss the best type of equipment that you will need to be successful as a beginner surfer. We'll go over fins, boards, and all the gear that will help you get the most out of your progression journey..
