Surfing Ocean Safety in Pacifica and Ocean Beach

This 1.5 hour class series is designed to teach the general public about surfing and ocean safety. With practical advice from local Lifeguard Sean Scallan, who has over 25 years of experience, this course will help keep you and your surfer friends safe next time you paddle out.

What we will cover: Sean will discuss weather and ocean conditions, including tides, currents, wind, and potential hazards in the water. He will give information on what to do when caught in dangerous situations such as rip tides and getting held under a wave.  He will also discuss how best to help others in distress when no lifeguard is present, without risking your own safety. He will focus on the types of conditions that he typically encounters at both Pacifica and Ocean Beach and will share stories from past rescue experiences and answer questions.

    About Your Instructor:

Sean Scallan is a legendary Ocean Beach lifeguard who grew up surfing Kelly’s Cove, beneath the Cliff House in San Francisco. From an early age, Sean knew that he wanted to be a lifeguard at Ocean Beach. In 1998, following several drownings in the treacherous rip currents, the National Park Service hired the first group of lifeguards dedicated to the three-mile stretch of Northern California coast. With a lifelong passion for the ocean, Sean was among the first members to join the team. Determined to keep visitors safe while enjoying the water, Sean's vigilance and swift responses have saved numerous lives, earning him great acclaim and recognition. Through his leadership and dedication, fatalities at Ocean Beach have drastically reduced. Sean's commitment to safety extends beyond rescues, as he has dedicated his career to educating the public about the many potential hazards involved with enjoying the beach. Sean Scallan embodies the true spirit of our ocean community, and his work has ensured a safer coastline for all.
